That morning, the sun began its ascent a bit earlier than normal. Canavar put a paw over his eyes; he was not used to waking up so early. He gave a soft growl as he stood up to stretch, thanking Tor and Fenris that he had not been killed during the night. And so began his hunt that day. He had lost a Golden Retriever to a Border Collie the previous day, and he wasn't about to lose again.

Furia snapped her jaws closed on the deer's hide, sinking her long, sharp fangs into the delicious flesh. Blood flooded her mouth, a long awaited sensation penetrating her mind, and she was overcome with blood lust.
"Yeeeouch!" a pain filled cry filled the cave, reverberating off the walls.
Furia's eyes snapped open, canine gaze taking in the situation quickly. With a bark Furia jumped off her "sister" Damini, staring dumbly at the spot she had just been. A pair of identical fang marks were left on Damini's rump.
"I'm so sorry it's just we haven't had any food in days and I had a dream and I was eating a deer..." she trailed off eyeing the fang marks again. She sighed. Damini stood up and stretched, her fur rippling and muscles engaging. "Well then, I guess we'll just have to track down ourselves a deer, wont we?" Damini said bounding out of the cave. Growling with pleasure at the thought of food Furia quickly followed suit, bathing herself in the morning light.

First Canavar began to trot, on the lookout for a snack. Food was scarce here, and he knew some dogs in the forest had even become so hungry as to eat berries. Most berries here, he knew, were poisonous, so he wondered if eating berries was a way to ease the hunger or just end the misery altogether.
He heard a sound in a nearby bush and crouched low. Be it deer or dog, he was ready to fight and win. Two female dogs, a Red Wolf and a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, emerged from the bush, in the same position as he was. Canavar raised an eyebrow. "Looking for something?" he asked. They both seemed to be formidable mates. The problem was, he'd have to pick one. And he was sure that if he picked one, the other would get mad. That's why he stayed alone, and trusted no one. He knew that whatever partner he had would stab him in the back over the perfect mate.

The rust colored female bristled at the comment, her sleek fur rippling with irritation. Furia had dealt with her fair share of males before and no way in the name of Tor was she going to let him lay a paw on Damini. Shifting her weight protectively in front of Damini, Furia emitted a low growl.
"And what would a lone male care of the business of two females? Oh course, we know the answer to this and let me say that you wont get either of us. Leave us be, this is our territory. Though I doubt you could tell with that pathetic excuse for a nose, mutt," Furia snarled.
Damini could tell this would get no where good but stayed back, letting her adoptive sister approach the male with the intent to fight. After all, Furia had saved Damini many times before and she didn't expect her to be any less protective now. So Damini stepped back towards the bushes, letting her elder of one year fight.

"Look, girls, I was very aware of your scent markings," growled Canavar in return, "but, honestly, do any dogs care these days? If a deer is on my land, I'll get a dozen dogs invading it. That's why... I don't have land anymore." He sat down. "It was a good spot of land. A nice bit of trees for hiding and a sleeping spot. Nice plants, which meant a lot of prey. I had good, fat prey there. But I digress. Anyway, I just need a chance. Just let me court your sister... or you, maybe," he said, getting to his feet and flashing a grin. He waited for a blow from the dog in front.

"As if I'd let you court her you saukerl!" Furia screeched in fury, launching herself off of her powerful hind legs. Even coolliding with her full force and weight the male barely swayed. Scrambling quickly back to her feet she bared her teeth menacingly. Once again propelling herself forward she felt her pointed canines seep into soft, delicate flesh. Feeling the blood fill her mouth Furia had a moment of counsiciousness of when she knew what she was doing before the blood lust settled in a comfortable haze. She sprang away, growling with delight at the sight of her work, though it wasn't much. Furia wanted more.
Damini watched in horror as her sister sprang at the significantly larger canine. Cowaring in fear Damini stifled a cry as the male barely moved. What happened next completely shocked her. As Furia bit into the dogs flesh Damini became scared. Scared for herself, the other dog... And her sister. The blood lust had tacked over and nothing could stop her until it was satisfied. Or if she was killed.

Canavr growled and leaped back at her. "Blood for blood, brat," he growled, finding his teeth sink into her hindquarters. At her cry of pain he bit down harder, until he tasted her salty blood. He was sure that if he dominated this female, he'd have her for sure. He'd have finally succeeded in getting a mate. He took his fangs out and lunged again, almost missing. He grabbed her ear and yanked on it. But then Canavar felt another prescence on top of him.

Damini hooked her claws in Canavar's haunches and yanked back. The larger dog flopped on one of her hind legs and scrambled off quickly. Though in pain Damini stood up. She barked, "Don't hurt her! If... If you don't harm her any more I'll... Be your mate. Just stop fighting!" Lowering her head to the ground to take a breath she repeated, "I'll be your mate."
No... NO! Don't do this Damini! Furia thought in horror. "No! I won't let you! You won't get either of us you filthy male!" she gasped. "I can still fight! I will fight until my last breath to protect her! Damini don't give up like this!"
Damini gave Furia a withering look. "Enough Furia. You've always protected me now let me help you. Lay down. Rest. It'll be alright," she whined nuzzling her sister affectionately. After all they had been through was this how it would end?

Canavar sat back to lick his wounds. "You'll really be my mate, huh? You'll have to leave your sister here, you know." Canavar didn't want this female to slip though his fingers, er, paws, but he felt a little compassion for this pair. He licked the claw marks on his back. "I, uh... don't want to screw everything up for you two, but isn't this what you want? To finally get a mate and be a mother?"
He eyed Furia warily as he spoke. She certainly didn't like the situation and was afraid of her wrath.

Damini looked whilst fully up to the sky. So clear and sunny at first glance but off in the distance she could see storm clouds brewing. Much like her current state of mind. "I don't know. It's always just been Furia and me, no males or thoughts of pups. I'm not sure I want to lose that, but if it means Furia won't have to constantly watch me and worry over me - perhaps even find a mate for herself - then I would give it up," she whispered the last part, her voice sorrowful. All the memories she had of this small stretch of forest. The pool they used to tackle each other into, the way the wind made melodies in the trees, and of course the peaceful sleeps after every amazing day. Would she really give this up? Just then a though occurred to her. "I will become your mate, on one condition. Let my sister stay with us. She's a great fighter and could help protect the pups. What do you say?" she asked suddenly egar about the idea. There was a way to have the best of both worlds. (Hannah Montana!)
Furia was upset. She didn't want this pathetic excuse for a dog to be her sisters mate! She didn't even want him to smell her! So when her sister proposed the idea of her staying with them she knew that if he agreed she would make his life a living hell.

Canavar nodded slowly. "I accept your offer," he said, and moved toward Damini. He sniffed her, devoured her scent like it was a deer. This would be his mate for about a year and a half before he would move on to another female. At least, most times it was like that. Some dogs preferred to mate for life, but he wasn't that kind of dog. He would stick around until his pups were old enough to defend themselves, and then he would move on. There was nothing more to it. -- Tahki, a female red fox, sniffed around, searching desperately for food. Food had been scarce in this part of the forest--or was it scarce everywhere? It didn't matter to Tahki. If she only caught a mouse, it would be enough. But she knew that more than a mouse, she had to find a mate; something in her told her that it was necessary. Soon. There was a soft squeak in the distance that her large ears picked up easily. She crouched low and followed both the scent and the sound of the mouse. She locked her eyes on it.

Paco clawed the ground impatiently. Not a morsel of food in a week. A whole week! Now being the small creature he is Paco doesn't require much in the means of food, but now he was battered and worn from all the fights with those brutes called "dogs". In his opinion foxes were superior in every way. Shoving his nose into the ground the Fennec fox pulled out a root. Not his ideal choice of meal but it would have to do. As he crawled back into his hole he began to reminisce in his past. He remembered his siblings rolling over each other as pups, fighting for the larger piece of food. Brothers and sisters to share the den with at night. Then all of that changed with a simple loud bang and the clanging of a lock sliding into place. Taken out of his home, away from his family, he was locked up for people to see. Then the fire came. It burnt down the concrete prison and he escaped. Though badly burned Paco managed to find this forest and at first Paco felt like it was heaven. Then of course all the horrible memories of battles for territory, for mates, or for food. This was far from heaven. Shaking his head to clear the painful. memories Paco heard it. A squeaking. Just like a mouse. Springing hastily to his feet he fixed his huge ears to listen for it again. Squweeeeeeeeeek. Slithering away like the sly creature he is Paco began to stalk. Upon arriving at a bush he stopped. The mouse was right there on the other side of the bush. Crouching down he wriggled his hind quarters and jumped.

Elsewhere in the forest, but not too far away, Tahki pounced too. She grabbed the mouse, which squeaked one final time before she bit down hard. It was a small meal, one that certainly would not satisfy her hunger, but it was something. Suddenly she came upon a large Himalayan Wolf. "Oh," she said awkwardly. "Hello."

Dyami peered down quizzically at the red fox, his warm brown eyes taking in the matted and mangled appearance of the significantly smaller creature. "Greetings swift one," he said in a soothing voice. Dyami was already nine years old, which is quite old for a canine living in these woods. Dipping his head Dyami bent down and sniffed at Tahki, inhaling deeply. "You seem hungry and tired. We are not so different in that way," he rumbled laying down with creaking bones.
