Tahki nodded awkwardly and began to say something, but stopped. She laid down next to the old, large dog. "Yes," she confessed, "I have only just caught a mouse, and that was my only meal in... four? five days?" She sighed and licked wounds she had earned a few days ago in a fight against a dingo. She barely held out, escaping to a narrow spot under a log. Males weren't the only ones who fought for mates. Now that she thought about it, that male had looked pretty smug to see the two of them fight over him. But she had let her mind wander too far, so turned back to the wolf. "I don't suppose you know where to snag a snack?

The old dog shook his head sadly. "If I did I wouldn't be so tired myself. Times have changed. There used to be less dogs, and more wild breeds. I've heard chatter that in other places some of the breeds that live in this forest are owned by humans. It's a queer thought, is it not?" he stated, tilting his head ever so slightly at the small fox.

"Humans? Why would they give themselves to humans?" She growled softly. "My sister was killed by a human. By his thunder-stick. They are selfish beasts. They did not hunt her for need, but for sport. I'll never forgive the one that did that to her. May her soul rest in peace." Tahkia sighed. "What do you know of humans?"

"Yes there are some canines that give themselves up to those creatures, mostly for a safe place with plenty of food and water, but some because the humans use them to hunt other creatures. They revel in the sport. I have seen first hand what humans do with our different species. My mate was killed by a hunter who wanted her pelt," he stopped before continuing angrily, "I will never forgive them for their crimes."

"Well," said Tahkia, rising to her feet, "I guess we part ways then." She bowed to the larger dog in respect and left him behind, looking for another meal.

It had been nearly two days since Canavar's agreement with the females. He had had his life threatened a few times if he even got near Damini. Furia was certainly protective of her adopted sister, and although he could easily beat her in a fight for what was rightfully his, he'd lose both Damini and the territory... and Furia. He was certain he'd win her over with his charming grin and body made of pure muscle. He would work on that, but he needed a meal and some way to get Damini alone. Or Furia, depending.

So it was on the second days night that Furia was lying down, eyeing the male warily. Nothing about him screamed "Oh Tor, isn't he dreamy?" or "I will stay by this female forever and protect my pups". No, nothing said that. Instead he resembled a play boy, swaggering around like he owned the place when it was originally their territory! The red wolf grumbled, nuzzling her head under her fore leg to hide the horrific sight. On the other paw, Damini was sleeping peacefully in the cave not to far from where her sister lay. Small woofs could be heard as the dog dreamed peacefully.

Canavar pretended to sleep, sneaking glances out of the corner of his eye. She just wouldn't go to sleep! He waited for a few hours then softly padded to his mate. He nudged her with his nose but was suddenly thrown backwards, knocked onto his back. In the moonlight, only a silhouette of his attacker could be seen. "Get off of me," he hissed, "we made a deal! She's mine. And besides that, this is my territory. Once the pups are born, I can drive you out!"

Furia's hackles rose as she pinned him down, his words pushing her closer to the edge. It would be so easy to kill him. Right here, right now, but what would her sister think of her after that? "I didn't agree to any of this! It was my sister who made this stupid deal, Tor help her. I have no reason to abide to your rules. Besides, it was you who first came into our territory. If anyone should be driving some one out it's me!" she spoke quietly yet aggressively, hoping her sister wouldn't wake up.

"Males are above females. This is mine now and as soon as my pups are born, I might convince my mate that you may get jealous." His face was a perfect challenge, his eyes glimmering with mischief in the moonlight. "And then, you'd be all alone. So play nice."

"Take. It. Back!" she screeched at him. "I have spent my whole life guarding Damini and myself against males. I have beaten more then I can name. There is no way Damini would forget that and think I'm jealous, and no way that males are above females!" By now Furia's amber orbs were gleaming with a ferocity she hadn't let anyone see in a long time. The pent up anger of being pushed around by males, the hatred towards them, and, behind all of that, the hurt and pain she felt because of males, for they had taken her family away once, and darn it she wasn't going to let that happen again.

Canavar thought she saw a flicker in her eyes. He wasn't sure what it was, or if he should ask about it. "The point is, you've got to leave me to do whatever I want. She and I had an agreement and you, being the kind and loving sister you are, should leave the Circle of Life as is. I, like most in this forest, have a mission and that's to reproduce so my legacy can go on. If that's not what you want to do, maybe you should stop hogging this territory and eating all the good stuff!"

"The Circle of Life isn't just about reproducing, it's also mainly about surviving. Also just because you two had an agreement doesn't mean I have to agree to it. It's between you two, so I am not obligated to follow it," she huffed at him.

"Just leave me alone! She's my mate now and I expect--" A stick cracked. "Shh." Canavar crept toward the sound. "It may be an intruder. Or a meal." His teeth shone when he grinned at her. "You coming?"
