Ceren gave a small smile as they walked. "Once, there was a deer. He was escaping from the wolves and drought, and one day, he saw a small group of deer in need. He gored the wolf that was attacking them and helped them on their way. Then a puma attacked the party and the deer valiantly died for them. One of the deer was injured, and although he didn't survive, he lives in the deer's hearts forever."

Awentia kept her head down to hide her tears. Everything that Aktaion had told them about Herne was amazing and now Osheen could be with the deer god himself. "I just wish we could get to the valley faster."

"We will," said Ceren comfortingly, "Don't worry."

"How do you know! The whole world seems against us getting there at all! For all you know, you could be next Ceren, you could be next."

Ceren swallowed a sudden lump in his throat. "Even if I am, you'll survive, and it'll be okay."

Awentia nodded her head in defeat. She didn't want Ceren to die, she was just over worked and over tired. Her body was worn out and she felt like she could collapse at any moment.

"Maybe we should rest," Siarra whispered. Ceren heard her, and nodded. "Good idea." They found a large oak, the grass greener then the area around.

A single withered oak leaf poked out from the ground, almost like a sign. "It's just like in Akation's story about Starbuck, the oak leaf that gave the deer they're antlers."

"Yeah. That." Ceren cleared his throat as he lay under the tree.

The moon reached the edge of the horizon as the sun sank. Stars speckled the dusk sky and the deer lay together in an uneasy peace. Awentia started as a snapping behind them woke her. The moon was far above them now and its rays flitted through the branches of the oak. "Who's there?" Another stick snapped to the left of her. "I dare you to come out here," she said timidly. From behind her a new pair of branches appeared on the tree. "A-are you a deer? Let us see who you are." The branches swayed in the breeze and a young Roe stag came out from behind the trunk. "Hello, my name is Hjortur. Do you mind?" Awentia stared in awe at the sudden appearance. Looking over at her friends sleeping body, she nodded her head.

None of the deer heard the whispers the two exchanged. Ceren moaned slightly and turned his head.

Hjortur lay down next the the other Roe deer and for once, she felt truly at ease. The moon drifted down toward the horizon and the sun moved on it's way around the world. Awentia opened her eyes to find her side cold and a lush pile of leaves in front of her. "What is this?" she asked with an edge. The mysterious deer was no where to be seen. Hesitantly, she took a bite.

Ceren slowly opened his eyes. "Awentia? What are you...?"

"There was a deer, and he was a Roe deer, like me, and now he's gone but there's this pile of leaves in front of me when I woke up. He said his name was Hjortur," Awentia breathed the scrambled story out. From behind her, more leaves settled in front of Ceren and Siarra.

"Huh? Siarra, wake up." Ceren stood, and loudly called, "Show yourself." Siarra groaned. "What?"
