The wolf turned around to see Ceren and Aktaion rushing at him. He was being quickly closed in, so he jumped over both of them and called to the rest of his pack. They ran back over the hill, but they would be back another day.

The young buck trotted toward Ceren and the new stag. "Thank you, for helping my friend."
Awentia scooted out from the trees, utterly exhausted from lack of water, and her sudden flight. She collapsed under the shade of a tree, and found her vision blurring. Heading sinking uselessly to the ground, she was caught in the hold of sleep.

"No problem," huffed Aktaion, sinking to the ground. "Yes, I suppose we should all rest," Siarra said, seeing Awentia. She lay beside her friend. "But someone needs to take watch. In case the pack returns," Ceren said.

"Perhaps I should. I felt so useless during the attack." Osheen poked and probed at this new comer and his friend. Hoping the would relent, Osheen buckled his legs to star out across the vast wooded area below.

"Thank you Osheen, but..." Ceren sighed. "I guess, if you'd really like to." He lay down and closed his eyes. "Good-night," Aktaion whispered, and he too closed his eyes.

(I know. But I want them to at least get to the valley before we ditch em.)
The night passed uneventfully. No wolves or mountain lions came. No human dwellings were in sight. "Thank Herne," Aktaion said. "Herne?" Siarra asked. "You don't know of Herne?" he asked, surprised. Every deer shook heir head.

"Come on, can't I at least entertain you with a story as we walk? It's better than silence, hm?" Aktaion suggested.
((Is there a Herne story in FireBringer that I don't remember that you do?))

Not waiting for anyone to answer, Aktaion began. "We will start with Starbuck and how the deer have antlers. For days and days Starbuck traveled through the forests, driven by wind and snow, hunted by fox and wolof, but he was to quick for them. Then finally he passed through the Great Glen and into Herne's Wood. He traveled until he reached a clearing and saw Herne himself lying by a brier, fast asleep. Hanging above him were Herne's antlers, which he also removes when he rests. "As any deer should know, only Starbuck could tread so lightly as to not wake the sleeping Deer God. So he crept over the the oak tree from which the antlers hanged and, using his muzzle, plucked them off and placed them on his own head." Aktaion paused portentously.

Siarra looked at the deer with confusion. She exchanged glances with her friends, all of them looking as skeptical as herself. But they said nothing and waited for their new friend to continue.

"So then thunder clapped and Herne woke. Seeing his antlers were gone, Herne sprang up in rage. He yelled in a booming voice, 'Who wakes the spirit of the forest? Who dares to steal Herne's antlers?' Starbuck was frightened but he kept his cool. He replied in a calm voice, 'It is I, Starbuck, the deer. I wear the antlers.' As you can imagine, Herne was mad. He charged at Starbuck screaming 'Give them back.' It was only when Starbuck jumped nimbly over Herne did he know he was beaten. He asked much gentler, 'What is it you seek?' Starbuck answered, 'No more then you. II seek antlers for the deer, to protect them from Lera. It is not much to ask, Lord Herne, for we are Hernling, yet we wander in the world with nothing to protect us but our senses and our speed."

"You mean our antlers make us nimble?" Ceren said skeptically. "The hinds don't even have antlers."
